Waldo Waldman - early morning workout & long walk

Last week I spoke at a sales conference in Orlando but was feeling anxious. It had been three weeks since my last program and I was rusty. Even after 20+ years as a speaker, I know that if I don’t prepare, I’ll fail.

So – I got up early, did a quick workout & went for a really long walk on the golf course adjacent to the hotel. I jumped on Google/ChatGPT and researched my client’s industry. I ran through my notes and mentally rehearsed every step of my program. I cleared my head, got focused, and developed the confidence I needed to deliver at my best.

Getting in the right mindset, visualizing success, and mentally prepping for my programs is critical for me.

Why?  Because I need it.   My brain is not the same it was when I was in my 20’s!

  • Sometimes I forget things.
  • Sometimes stress and a busy schedule prevent me from doing the hard, tedious  work required to do my best.
  • Sometimes the complacency missile creeps up on me and I’m tempted to “sleep in” and “wing it”

I can’t let that happen if I want to remain relevant…and neither can you.

Preparation is the secret weapon we all have at our control.  It diminishes fear, accelerates confidence, and allows us to be present.

Will your preparation create the perfect sales call, client meeting or customer presentation?  Probably not.  And it surely won’t make you fearless and fault free.

But it will nurture the confidence and resilience needed to create the best outcome for your customers who are trusting you to provide value and deliver on your promises.

Don’t seek perfection, and don’t expect to win every mission.

But don’t expect to either if you’re not willing to put in the work.

Remember, Wingmen Never Wing It!
